Howrah Bridge, Kolkata.
Howrah Bridge connects
the cities of Kolkata and Howrah across the Hooghly River
and carries a daily traffic of 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000
pedestrians.
In 1965 it was renamed
Rabindra Setu.
Its predecessor was
a floating pontoon bridge created in 1874
which was opened every night to let ships through.
Construction of a new
Howrah Bridge was started in 1937 and was completed in 1943.
Howrah Bridge is one
of the finest cantilever bridges in the world and is said to be
the busiest brige in the world.
