Hathersage Parish Church and the Hope Valley, Derbyshire.
Stanage Edge is in the
distance.
Hathersage is in the
north of the county and at the heart of the High Peak part of
the Peak District National
Park.
The parish church is
reputed to have the grave of Little John, Robin Hood's lieutenant.
In 1845 Charlotte Bronte
visited her best friend from her schooldays, Ellen Nussey,
whose father was vicar of Hathersage. She used her three week
stay to walk the moors
and to visit the country houses around about. Her novel 'Jane
Eyre' is set in Hathersage
and the fictitious village is named Morton, which was the name
of the local publican.
The parish church contains 15th century brasses of the Eyre family.
Close by is North Lees Hall (Thornfield in 'Jane Eyre') which
originally belonged to the real Eyre family.
