(former husband of Lady Caroline Lamb who became notorious for
her liaisons with Lord Byron).
Another Victorian Prime Minister Lord Palmerston married Lady
Caroline Lamb and inherited Melbourne Hall.

In the 12th century
the manor was owned by the Bishops of Carlisle,
It came into the hands of the Coke family and was partly rebuilt
by Sir John Coke between 1629 and 1631.
The South Front (above) was rebuilt in 1743-4 by G. L. Coke.
