Picking Nilgiri Tea near Coonoor.

Nilgiri Tea is a dark, intensely aromatic, fragrant and flavourful tea.
It is grown on steep slopes such as this at around 5,000 feet.

Tea pickers pick the new shoots at a rapid rate and
put them in the sack attached to the head.
They are usually woman. The gentleman with the umbrella
is probably a supervisor.

Much of of the tea is used for domestic consumption though some
of the higher grades are exported.

At a tea auction held in Las Vegas, Nevada, a Nilgiri tea achieved top hounours
and a world record price of $600 per kg.
