The Silk Mill, Derby.
Now the Derby
Industrial Museum.
The original Silk Mill
was built between 1717 and 1721 and was Britain's first mill.
It was five storeys high and was powered by a water wheel which
drove all the wooden machinery
(several storeys high) within
the building by wooden shafts and cogs.
When in operation it was a regarded as a wonder of the age and
attracted many visitors,
including Daniel Defoe and Boswell.
The Derwent Valley,
from here to Cromford, is designated a World
Heritage Site.
