St. Mary's Gate, Derby.
This short road between
Queen Street and Bold Lane has the Shire Hall
at the Western end and the Cathedral at the Eastern end.
It is home to many long established law firms.
The Evans family of
Darley Abbey had a house here (where the tree on the left is),
as did the Strutt family. St Mary's Gate is where William, Joseph,
Elizabeth, George Benson
and Martha Strutt spent their childhood in the mid 18th century,
before they moved to Thorntree House at the bottom of St. Peter's
Street.
The Shire Hall (1660)
was built for the use of the county of Derbyshire
(when Derby was the County town) for elections, trials and meetings.
It is now Derby Magistrate's Court
