Wingfield Manor, South Wingfield, Derbyshire.

Wingfield Manor is a deserted, ruined house in the care of English Heritage and is rarely open to the public.

It was built in 1450 for Ralph, Lord Cromwell, on the site of a former 12th century castle.

It was bought by the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury.
The 6th Earl of Shrewsbury (the 4th husband of Bess of Hardwick)
was entrusted with the care of Mary Queen of Scots when she was detained
from 1569 onwards and she was kept in his various of his houses around Derbyshire,
(he owned Hardwick, Chatsworth) including Wingfield Manor.
She was detained at Wingfoeld Manor on three occasions.

It may have been here that she met Anthony Babington (his family lived nearby at Dethick)
who organised the abortive Babington Plot.

The Peak District National Park.
