Joseph Wright's gravestone.

Joseph Wright was originally buried in St. Alkmund's Church, Derby.

When the church was demolished his bones, together with all the others
were buried in a communal grave at Derby's Nottingham Road Cemetery.
In the 1980's this gravestone lay in St. Werburgh's churchyard,
where this photograph was taken.

It was then taken to the Cathedral churchyard where it was put in a prominant position.
It is now displayed in the south aisle of the Cathedral.

Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) was the most important painter

The Derby Museum and Art Gallery has the Wright Gallery
which contains the most important collection of his works.
